Artist's Statement
Vis a Vis came to fruition as an exploration of identity through the historically expansive genre of portrait painting. The title literally translates to 'face to face', which can refer to the dace of the viewer opposite the face of the portrait painting, but is more commonly used to mean 'in relation to'. People construct their identities for themselves in relation to the Other and how we define them. By reconsidering the conventions of figurative painting to examine the notion of the Other, I wanted to push identity beyond mere paint representation. Working with contrasting elements, such as complementary colors and converse brushwork, from loosely painted to more refined details, invites readings beyond the confines of the represented subject.
